A Season of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday to celebrate with family and express gratitude for the year’s bringings. On November 20th, Kids Kollege hosted its Thanksgiving Holiday Program. Scholars from Classic and Freedom School demonstrated their gratitude through a series of skits.

The Classic scholars performed a medley of songs pertaining to Thanksgiving. A few of which included “Have You Ever Seen a Pumpkin” and “Mr. Turkey.” The Classic Scholars also performed an original skit written by Ms. Cynthia Daniels, Classic Afterschool Coordinator. In the piece entitled “All on the Table,” scholars dressed up as dishes that are traditionally on the Thanksgiving menu; turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, etc. The dishes began to argue over which food is most important. Eventually, they decided to allow the family members to decide. As the family ate, the dishes realized that they all played an important role in making the family happy. The morale: No one entity is more important than the other. When we come together, we can make a stronger impact.

As the room filled with applause, the Freedom School scholars prepared for their presentation.

The scholars of Level 1 boldly and proudly proclaimed what and who they were thankful for. Responses varied from God, family, friends, and Kids Kollege. Level 2 & 3 performed literary theater. Through this presentation, scholars re-enacted the book, The Night Before Thanksgiving with a creative ending. The audience watched as they visited one family endure through a round house battle between man and turkey. It was night filled with hungry parents, angry turkeys, and flying pies. At the end, the family reached a compromise and instead of eating turkey, they ate veggie steak. The morale: Whenever an impossible situation develops between two, a compromise is attainable to become one.

Clapping, cheering, and stomping followed as the Kids Kollege Cheerleaders performed their classic routine. Choreographed by Jenetta Weaver, cheerleading coach, the scholars displayed their fire and energy. In the spirit of the season, the cheerleaders did a special tribute to Ms. Carolyn Coleman, for whom they were all thankful for.

As the program came to a close, Kids Kollege gave an opportunity for the families to do some grocery shopping. With tables filled with food, families lined up to grab what they could for the holiday. Turkeys, hams, juice, rice, potatoes, and hundreds of canned goods were available for pick-up. Bright smiles, warm hugs, and hearty “thank you’s” filled the air as people loaded their cars and left for the holiday season.

November 20th was indeed a night of vibrant celebration and heart-filled gratitude.
